Rating:

Four clans of feral cats have settled into their new homes and renewed old rivalries.  Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw were once close when they shared the long journey to find their new home, but now Squirrelflight questions Brambleclaw's loyalty to their clan.  Brambleclaw insists on trusting his brother Hawkfrost who is from a rival clan, and both of them were fathered by the murderous, ambitious Tigerstar.  Leafpool, Squirrelflight's sister, is struggling with her own divided loyalties.  She loves Crowfeather but their love is forbidden -- not only because he is a warrior from a rival clan, but also because she is a medicine cat and cannot have a mate.  She also feels torn because her friend Mothwing, the medicine cat for another clan, has confessed that she does not believe in StarClan, the warrior ancestors who guide all of the clans.

This volume in the series is a bit less satisfying than some of the previous ones.  Much of the action comes when an emotional Squirrelflight acts impulsively and gets into trouble.  The romantic tension between Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight feels more real than the forbidden attachment of Leafpool and Crowfeather.  Some issues are resolved by the end of the book, but others remain for the next (and most likely final) volume in the series.  Knowledge of previous volumes in the series is important.

 Three and a half stars.

Thanks for posting this review, didn't even know about these books, kind of reminds me of "Watership Down."
