Having been forced from their homes by the destruction of the forest, four clans of feral cats arrive at a lake where they hope to make new homes.  They all wait for a sign from StarClan to let them know their ancestors have not abandoned them.   The clans have worked together on their journey but now old rivalries arise again as the cats try to claim new territory for their own clan.  Will the cats adhere to the warrior code and stay true to their clan or will friendships, love interests, and family bonds cause divided loyalties?

Brambleclaw and Leafpaw are the two main characters in this volume.  Brambleclaw had emerged as a leader in the small group that had made a difficult journey to find a way to save the clans from the destruction of the forest.  Now he wonders if this new place really is their intended home or if he has led everyone astray.  He wants to prove his loyalty to his clan but feels he will never be accepted because of the legacy of his father Tigerclaw.  Leafpaw, an apprentice medicine cat, must try to find healing herbs in this new place.  She worries about the brokenhearted Crowfeather, her sister's friend from a rival clan, and hopes they can all find a way to communicate with StarClan.

Fans of the series will be pleased with this latest edition.  Although much of the book deals with the business of finding and settling into their new homes, there is enough action, romance, and intrigue to keep the reader interested.
