A delightful read - this book is so going on my list of great holiday gift books. Sisters Rosalind, Skye, Jane, and little Batty are spending the summer in the Berkshires with their widowed father and beloved dog, Hound. The cottage belongs to the estate of haughty Mrs. Tifton whose primary concern is that the Penderwicks don't make noise or go near her gardens. The girls enjoy their time on the sprawling grounds, and twelve-year-old Rose develops a crush on Cagney the gardener while Batty falls head over heels for his pet rabbits. Tensions mount when the girls befriend Mrs. Tifton's son Jeffrey, a talented pianist who is slated to be sent to military academy like his maternal grandfather. These characters are intensely likeable and the story is a timeless one of friendship, family, adventure, and triumph.
