Review of Ready or Not : An All-American Girl Novel by Meg Cabot

I have always gotten a kick out of Meg Cabot's books - for both adults and teens.  Her heroines are always getting stuck in some ridiculous situation that always makes me laugh out loud.  And this one is no different.  This is the sequel to All American Girl (2002) and is more about the crazy life of Samantha Madison, saver of the President's life, and girlfriend of the President's son.

A year has passed since the close of the last book, and David and Sam are still going strong.  They have a great, caring, and fun relationship, although their schedules are so crowded that they really only see each other on Saturdays and at art classes.  But Sam is put on the spot when David asks her to join his family at Camp David for the Thanksgiving weekend.  Sam is sure that his only motive is to get here there to have sex, and she is really not sure if she's ready or not, hence the title.  And you never really know until the very end whether she went through with it.  If you don't want to know, skip the last paragraph.

I am really glad Meg Cabot made the choice she did.  Samantha decides to have sex for the first time, and it was good.  They were responsible physically (2 forms of birth control) and mentally.  And I think it is very refreshing to see for once that a teenager has sex and there are no terrible consequences.  She doesn't get pregnant, or a disease, or her boyfriend dumps her or is cruel.  It is a beautiful example of what a healthy relationship should be.  Kudos to Meg for being brave.  I am sure there will be those out there who will be mortified...I mean, we can't let on to teens that sex (for the right reasons) is enjoyable!  Anyway, that's my little speech.  But read the book.  It is a funny, well told story.
