Psyche is an actress in the movies her father makes.  Her mother left them both, but Psyche still has her mother's wardrobe as a constant reminder.  One night a phantom lover appears in Psyche's bedroom.  He fills her dreams with images from the myths he tells her.  Although she loves him, she has her doubts because he won't allow her to see his face.  When her sisters convince her that her lover is a monster, she waits for him to fall asleep then lights a candle.  Instead of a monster, Psyche finds a beautiful god.  When he awakes and confronts her, she sends him away because she doesn't feel worthy of him, a god.  So begins her journey of self-discovery.  With each new lover, Psyche lives out a different myth, but she can never forget her lost love.

A basic knowledge of mythology is needed to fully appreciate this novel in verse.  Chapter headings that introduce new characters, such as Orpheus, Hades, and Demeter, will make it easier for readers to identify and research the correct myths.  The language and subject matter make it more appropriate for older teens.  Beautiful, imaginative, enjoyable.  Fans of Francesca Lia Block will not be disappointed.

Four and a half stars.
