Marly's Ghost

David Levithan

Date: 01 December, 2005   —   $10.19   —   Book

product page

Rating:

It's the day before Valentine's Day and Ben is pining for his dead girlfriend Marly.  Then Marly's ghost appears and tells Ben he will be visited by three more ghosts.  What follows is basically Dickens' A Christmas Carol updated for a new holiday.

The backstory of Ben and Marly's relationship is touching and Levithan's retelling of the classic story is clever, but somehow the novel didn't work for me.  I think Levithan followed the original too closely.  Certain parts seemed really dated -- who has a fireplace in the bedroom these days and what was the DJ doing with records

Disappointing.
