For thousands of years the avians and the serpiente have fought, but now the two civilizations are reluctantly joined in the Wyvern's Court. The falcons are considered outsiders by both groups although long ago they were united with the serpiente. Nicias, the son of two falcon refugees at the Wyern's Court, is a bodyguard to princess Oliza, heir to the throne. When Nicias begins to show signs of magical abilities, he must travel to the falcon city of Ahnmik and seek help from the rulers who exiled his parents or else the magic may consume him.
This volume in the series is all magic and politics and not much action or romance. Favorite characters from previous books appear briefly, if at all. The true cause of the war between the avians and serpiente is revealed, so fans of the series will want to read it for that reason, but that seems to be the only purpose of this book -- to reveal the secret. A filler volume in the series, but brief and readable. Not recommended as a stand-alone title.
