Leo Carraway is an active member in his school's Young Republicans Club, much to the horror of his free spirited best friend, Melinda.  Just as Leo is starting to feel that maybe he and Melinda don't have much in common, any more, he makes another discovery that is just as startling.  His biological father, Marion X. McMurphy is also known as King Maggot, the front man for Purge, a heavy metal band that doesn't exactly blend in well with Leo's lifestyle.  After being falsely accused of cheating on a test, and losing a scholarship to Harvard, Leo decides to ask King Maggot to pay his tuition.  He agrees to take a summer job with the band as a roadie, at the end of which Leo will ask for the money.  During the summer, Leo tries to maintain his sense of humor while dealing with egotistical superstars, nasty fellow roadies, and a grumpy Melinda, who is following the tour.  During the summer, Leo learns about fame, his biological father as well as other possible relatives, and himself.  When summer ends, Leo must decide whether or not it's right to ask King Maggot for tuition money.
Leo is an extremely sarcastic, yet likable narrator.  His descriptions of his friends, his fellow Young Republicans, and his family are hilarious, and while he does poke fun of them, he is never mean spirited.  While everyone is skewered, here, from Democrats to Republicans to celebrities, but stereotypes are shattered, as well.  The book is warmhearted, but never strays far from the humor. Recommended for anyone who's craving a male protagonist, especially for the upper middle school/lower high school set.
