Rating:

Separated since bith, seventeen-year-old twins Thais and Clio have never met until Thais father dies unexpectedly and she is sent to live with a friend in New Orleans, where Clio lives with her grandmother. Thais not only finds her sister, but she learns that she is decended from a long line of witches. The girls learn that magical twins are extremely feared because their magic together is extremely powerful- and a coven of witches (the Treize) wants to harness the twins magical power for their own ends. The first installment in the Balefire series starts off a little slowly, but really gets going with a major cliff hanger at the end. The narration alternates between Thais and Clio's narrations, with small parts in between from the perspectives of others in the Treize. This constantly changing narration and perspective is slightly distracting and confusing at first. The variety of characters keeps things interesting. A big cliffhanger leaves a lot of unanswered questions and forces readers to look for the second book, A Circle of Ashes. A mixture of fantasy, horror, mystery and romance, this series will find a variety of readers.
